Searching for a speech or wedding toast?
In this current age of communication in which we live the internet continues to grow at an ever increasing rate. The amount of information available to us at the press of a button is astounding to comprehend and whilst there are many, many great things to admire on the internet, there are many disadvantages. I don't intend to open a huge debate on the pros and cons of the internet as that is another can of worms altogether. However one aspect in particular does interest me; plagiarism. Maybe that is too harsh a word, or it is misleading at the least. I'll try and explain further.

Having access to so much knowledge is incredibly useful, but on the other hand it has the potential to stifle creativity. When I am writing a wedding toast or speech I like it to be my work, and I prefer to make it individual to the day. It is far too easy to do a quick search these days for "speech wedding toast" or "best man speech" etc and in many cases you can find full toasts, from start to finish! You could almost take a template and insert the name of the Bride or Groom where appropriate and read it ad verbatim.

I don't believe this is the best kind of speech because it is completely impersonal, leaves no room for wit and I also think it's cheating. Of course I have previous experience to guide me, and not everyone is good at speaking in front of others, but I would never turn up and deliver the same toast twice. Apart from the issues mentioned previously, I believe it helps my delivery of the speech if it is fresh to me. There's nothing wrong with finding jokes, taking ideas and applying them, or even using an existing speech as a template or guide when devising one's own, but the temptation to steal is too alluring for many.
